Astringent (Styptic, Hemostat)

Astringent - constricts tissues, reducing inflammation of the mucous membranes and aiding in waste product removal. Binds by a coagulation of proteins, most are high in tannins and plants with high amounts of tannins should not be combined with plants high in alkaloids. Astringents are commonly use as gargles, mouthwashes (spongy or bleeding gums), sits baths, and vagina irritation. Can be generally drying in nature  though they can help the body retain fluid on a larger scale by preventing excessive urination caused by weak renal tissues. Can act as antimicrobials by toning tissues and making it hard for bacteria to adhere to them.

Styptic/Hemostat - when used to stop bleeding this is what they are called.
